Green Canyon, Pangandaran

Amazing Natural Scene at Green Canyon, West Java

Indonesia is known for its beautiful nature. Wherever you go across the country, you will find a variety of spectacular attractions. When you visit Java Island, Indonesia, make sure you visit Green Canyon, near to Pangandaran Beach, Ciamis Regency, in West Java, Indonesia.  Green Canyon, which was traditionally called Cukang Taneuh, offers a line of natural attractions that have amazed millions of local and international tourists every year. The Green Canyon is situated along the Cijulang River with the main spot located at Kertayasa Village and Batukaras Village. Talking about Batukaras, Batukaras Beach has been long recognized as a favorite destination for water surfing.

The beauty of Green Canyon begins from the first time you get into the entrance gate. The River Cijulang splits two faces of cliffs, providing gorgeous panorama. If you are familiar with the Green Canyon of Colorado, the United States, you will probably agree that the physical structures of the two Green Canyons are identical. The similarity is perhaps the reason behind the name. The Green Canyon becomes more attractive because of the existence of some other interesting spots.

“Green Canyon” Journey through some truly wondrous jungle – rich in massive teak trees, palms, various hanging vinery and the shrill sounds of extensive bird-life. The canyon is apparently a couple of hundred meters long, but it is only safe for visitors to venture the first hundred. At the end of the passable section, the opportunity arises to jump from a 5 meter high stalagmite formation rising from the canyon floor into a deep pool below. The rocks aren’t sharp or slippery and there’s a myriad of harmless critters around like frogs, dragonflies and miniature crabs to marvel at too.

Mount Papandayan, Garut

Active Mountain with Many Craters

Mount Papandayan is a complex stratovolcano, located in Garut Regency, to the southeast of the city of Bandung in West Java, Indonesia. It is about 15 km to the southwest of the town of Garut. At the summit, there are four large craters which contain active fumaroles fields. An eruption in 1772 caused the northeast flank to collapse producing a catastrophic debris avalanche that destroyed 40 villages and killed nearly 3,000 people. The eruption truncated the volcano into a broad shape with two peaks and a flat area 1.1 km wide with Alun-Alun crater in the middle, making the mountain look like a twin volcano. One of the peaks is called Papandayan and the other Mount Puntang.

Mount Papandayan is a large composite volcano. It is constructed of alternating layers of lava and ash, and other fragmental volcanic rock debris formed by explosive eruptions over the past several hundred years. A large horseshoe-shape crater extended to the northeast resulting in an avalanche deposit consisted of intermixed volcanic debris and alternated rocks, Kawah Manuk and many others with solfataras emitting smoke and hot fumes from its inner sides.

The Mount Papandayan area is a popular tourist site. Tourists can walk across the crater and view phenomena such as bubbling mud pools, steam vents and sulfur deposits. The bubbling yellow crater (Kawah Papandayan or “Papandayan Crater”) is a popular sight. There are various other volcanic craters in the area to the south of Bandung as well. Another volcanic crater in the same region with easy access is Kawah Putih in the nearby Bandung District to the west of Mt Papandayan.

Above the crater are an elfin forest and several meadows with Javanese edelweiss. Papandayan Mountain is situated on the island of Java, at 7°32′ S and 107°73’E, rising 2.665 m. Papandayan Mountain is one of the natural wonder in West-Java. Papandayan is a complex strata volcano with four large summit craters, the youngest of which was breached to the NE by collapse during a brief eruption in 1772 and contains active fumaroles fields. This interesting place lies in the border of the Bandung and Garut regencies, about seventy kilometers south of Bandung and about 19, 25 km from Garut. It is one of the most spectacular volcanoes in this province and the top of the mountain are easily reaches, because there are special road leading to the crater. Mount Papandayans crater is probably one of the most spectacular mountain scenes on Java Island. There is a Cangkuang temple situated by Cangkuang Lake, which was a major discovery of archaeological value as it was the first of its kind found in West Java, dating back to the 8th century. This volcano is situated 17 km from Garut or 50 km from Bandung.

Citumang River, Pangandaran

The Tranquil and Thrilling River

The Citumang River near Pangandaran with its clear blue water, runs through green thick forests deep in the Cijulang area along the south coast of West Java. Its banks are decorated with beautiful boulders withbranches of trees and bushes picturesquely bending over the river. As the water flows on, it enters an astonishing cave. Here, tranquility greets visitors warmly. The only sounds heard are the sweet harmonny of nature:  music created by gurgling water and the soft whispers of the wind as it makes its way through the trees, accompanied by the many unique sounds of hidden animals.

This river of tranquility is located at the Bojong Village, in the Ciamis Region, about 15Km west of Pangandaran. The name Citumang is given by the locals who believe that a certain crocodile with a broken leg once lived in this river. The crocodile’s name was “Si Tumang”, while “Ci” means : river.   Hence the name Citumang given to the river.

As you walk among the high cliffs, the rush of the river can already be heard. Passing the cliffs, the stunning beauty of the river is unveiled. Its clear blue water slowly invites you to jump in. When you walk further up stream, you will find a waterfall with a huge tree that has dangling roots like ropes that you can hang on to. This is a perfect place to follow your adrenalin rush: imagine yourself as Tarzan, swinging from its roots to jump down into the river.

Further upstream, you will find a rare natural wonder. The water from the river drops down and disappears into the earth to reappear downstream, just like a natural plumbing system. The place is located at the tip of a cave called Taringgul cave, and the flow of the river down into the earth is called “Sanghyang Tikoro” or translated means “the God of the Throat”.

The river’s characteristic and relatively fast current makes it a perfect place for special activities like body rafting and watertubing. Instead of using inflatable boats or kayak, body rafting literally uses the body (obviously, wearing safety equipment such as helmet and life vest) to navigate through the river.
Equally thrilling, watertubing is a special type of river rafting that uses inflatable donut shaped “tubes” instead of boats or kayaks. Here, ‘rafters’ and ‘tubers’ will get the chance to enjoy the splendor of the Citumang River at its finest, both in its tranquility and equally thrilling side of the river.

Citumang River is also a perfect place to bring your kids and family. Here, you can teach them the values of nature, the importance of the environment, and a place where to spend quality time, not only with each other, but also with the surroundings. As city activities become more stressing with each passing day, wash your stress away by soaking your weary head in the cool, clear, fresh mountain water. Close your eyes and just let all your burdens flow downstream.  A trip to the Citumang River is the closest you can get to finding an F5 button in your life, so while you’re there, just hit it! Refresh!

Ciletuh Geopark, Sukabumi

ADVENTURE
Surf the waves, scale the peaks, and explore the distant reaches of the world.

The natural landscape of ancient rocks with many waterfalls!
Ciletuh is a geopark located in Sukabumi, West Java – Indonesia, Ciletuh geopark has a fantastic view of the mountains, amazing climbing route, and unique local culture. A region that extent an area of 36 thousand hectares has a wealth of unique geological formation period of 100 million to 65 million years ago, nine waterfalls, and huge cliffs that form the amphitheater.

Where the turquoise sea hits the sandstone, incredible formations take shape, including a natural fortress, a famous black boulder locally known as Batu Nunggul and the brown sandy Legon Pandan Beach.

Nearby Kunti Island is also a geologic wonder, containing formations of pillow lava from an underwater volcanic eruption millions of years ago. The pillow-like stacks show the original direction of the lava flow.

Other types of rock with different shapes, patterns and colors constitute the island, often topped with colorful umang (snails). There is also a cave filled with guano from the bats that inhabit it.

Besides its geologic wonders, Ciletuh Bay has beautiful waterfalls called Curug Cimarinjung and Curug Kanteh. Though both offer the same picture-perfect view, the latter is easier to reach due to more developed access road and paths. A nearby warung (food stall) is always full of local youths ready to serve as tour guide.

Very nice place for a painter or a photographer for inspiration, as well as a haven for hikers and adventurers. This place is a vast park, so it takes a few days for you to enjoy the beauty.

To find these ancient stones, one must venture to Ciletuh Bay on the Indian Ocean about six to seven hours by car from Bandung. After arriving in Ciletuh Bay, tourists usually make their first stop at Mandra Island, an uninhabited island with wild plants covering a hilly greywacke sandstone landscape.

Diamonds hoped to become jewel in Bandung’s tourism crown

Indo Wisata Permata is offering tours of the diamond manufacturing process from raw material to finished goods.

The historical Archduke Joseph Diamond is presented at a Christie’€™s auction preview in Geneva, Switzerland. Recently launched at the Citra Green Dago Complex area in Bandung, Indo Wisata Permata is offering tours of the diamond manufacturing process from raw material to finished goods.

Home to refreshingly lush highlands and affordable shopping and culinary destinations, Bandung in West Java is already a popular retreat for domestic as well as foreign tourists. But it recently set its eyes on a new tourism icon: diamonds.

Recently launched at the Citra Green Dago Complex area in Cidadap district, Indo Wisata Permata offers a tour of the diamond manufacturing process from raw material to finished goods.

Indo Wisata Permata manager Yofi Mesa Yudi said Indonesia was known as a producer of high-quality diamonds, yet the manufacturing process still uses traditional methods, and was thus less competitive in the global market.

“Starting today, we are opening our doors for all diamond enthusiasts to directly witness the manufacturing process of raw diamonds into high-quality products with high value using the best machines and skilled workers,” said Yofi in Bandung on Sunday as quoted by Antara news agency.
The skilled workers are said had been brought from India. Visitors will be able to marvel at the craftsmanship behind the glass screen.

Yofi said visitors could also purchase finished goods for competitive prices starting from Rp 1 million (US$75) to Rp 1 billion.

“This is the first diamond educational tourism site in Asia. Indeed, other countries have this kind of tourism, but they don’t openly show the manufacturing process from scratch until it becomes a beautiful diamond,” said Yofi.

Visitors to Indo Wisata Permata will need to purchase a ticket priced at Rp 50,000. They will later be given a Rp 50,000 voucher that they can use to buy food and beverages provided at the location.
A diamond enthusiast who joined Sunday’s opening tour, Yuni, said the place offered a very different experience from a trip to a normal diamond shop.

“Here you can learn about how diamonds are manufactured starting from the very beginning until the finished goods. Everything is clear and transparent,’said Yuni.

The Promising Historical Land

Cimahi, located 180km south east of Jakarta, is situated between Bandung and West Bandung Regency. Cimahi comprises three districts, which in turn are grouped into fifteen villages. Its lowest elevation is 685 metres (2,247 ft) above sea level and directs to Citarum River. Its highest elevation is 1,040 metres (3,410 ft) above sea level, which is part of the slope of mount Tangkuban Perahu and Burangrang. The Cimahi river flows through the city and Cimahi also has two Springs, named Cikuda and Cisontok. The name Cimahi was taken from the Cimahi river that flows through the city. The word originated from the Sundanese language and literally means “enough water”. Residents of Cimahi get their water supply from the river.

Cimahi’s prominence increased in 1811, when Governor-General Herman Willem Daendels constructed the Great Post Road. A checkpoint, known as Loji, was built in Cimahi Square. Between 1874–1893, the Cimahi rail station and a railroad connecting Bandung and Cianjur was built. The building of military training centers and other military buildings was started in 1886. Cimahi was granted district status in 1935. In 1975, Cimahi became the first administrative city in West Java and the third in Indonesia. Cimahi was then granted full city status in 2001.

Sumedang (former official name: Soemedang) is a town in West Java, Indonesia, approximately 46 km northeast of Bandung. It is the capital of Sumedang Regency. The town is just south of the volcanic Mount Tampomas, which is 1,684 m (5,525 ft) high and is usually climbed from the subdistrict of Cimalaka, 7 km from Sumedang.

Sumedang’s museum, Prabu Geusan Ulun, houses a collection of traditional Sundanese weaponry, as well as some crown jewels and other finery. It is located on Geusan Ulun Road.

The town is famous for tahu Bungkeng, a local variety of deep fried tofu which was first made by a Chinese immigrant, Ong Kino.

Within the district surrounding the town lies Cadas Pangeran, a section of the trans-Java postal road constructed on the order of Dutch governor Willem Daendels during the first quarter of 19th century. The section is famous due to difficulty during the construction, which requires blasting of a mountainside. Hence “cadas” which means mountain rock in Sundanese. The section is finished due to cooperation between the governor, regent Kusumadinata known as “pangeran kornel”, and the people of Sumedang, although with considerable ill-feeling on the part of the regent and the people due to forced labor practice. A statue commemorating this event is erected on the section.

The town also houses the exiled Indonesian national heroine Cut Nyak Dhien from Aceh during her old age, after she was captured during the Aceh War at the beginning of 20th century. Her tomb is located not far from the town.

Purwakarta is a city in the West Java province of Indonesia and the capital of the Purwakarta Regency. Around the beginning of the 17th century Sultan Mataram sent an army led by the Regent of Surabaya and West Java. One aim is to subdue the Sultan of Banten. But in a way that clashed with VOC forces had to withdraw.

After the second expedition was sent back from the troops under the command of Mataram Dipati Ukur and suffered the same fate. To prevent territorial expansion of the Company (VOC), the Sultan of Mataram sent Penembahan Galuh Ciamis named RAA Wirasuta the title Duke or Duke Panatayuda Kertabumi III to occupy Rangkas Sumedang (Eastside Citarum). It also set up defenses in Tanjungpura, Adiarsa, Parakansapi and Kuta game. After the fort was founded Kertabumi III Duke then returned to Galuh and died.
