PURWAKARTA

Purwakarta is a city in the West Java province of Indonesia and the capital of the Purwakarta Regency. Purwakarta’s existence is inseparable from the history of the struggle against the forces of the Dutch East India Company (Dutch: Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, VOC, “United East India Company”). It also set up defenses in Tanjungpura, Adiarsa, Parakansapi and Kuta game. After the fort was founded Kertabumi III Duke then returned to Galuh and died. CIREBON

The Border Of Sunda And Java

Cirebon (formerly referred to as Cheribon in English) is a port city on the north coast of the Indonesian island of Java. It is located in the province of West Java near the provincial border with Central Java, approximately 297 km east of Jakarta. The urban core of Cirebon is very small in extent, however, its dense suburbs sprawl into the surrounding regency. The seat of a former Sultanate, the city’s West and Central Java border location have seen its history influenced by both Sundanese and Javanese culture as well as Chinese.

Being on the border of “Sunda” (i.e., West Java) and “Jawa” (i.e., Central Java), many of Cirebon’s residents speak a dialect that is a mix of Sundanese and Javanese. It is thought that the word “cirebon” derives from the Javanese word, caruban, meaning “mixed”, a reference to the city’s mix of Sundanese, Javanese, Chinese, and Arabic cultural elements. Alternatively, it could be derived from the Sundanese words of “Ci” (water or river) and “Rebon” (“shrimp”). (Indeed, the main production of the city is fishery including shrimps).

Aside from fishery, its harbour, Tanjung Emas, on the Java Sea has been a major hub for timber from Borneo. A small landing site “Penggung” also serves the TNI-AU. The city lies on Jalur Pantura (Pantai Utara Jawa), a major road on the northern coast of Java that stretches from Anyer, passes through Jakarta, and ends at Surabaya.

According to the manuscript Purwaka Caruban Nagari, in the 15th century Cirebon started as a small fishing village named Muara Jati. At that time the port of Muara Jati already attracted foreign traders. The port master at that time was Ki Gedeng Alang-Alang, who was appointed by the king of Galuh kingdom, located inland in Kawali, Ciamis. Ki Gedeng Alang-Alang moved the port to Lemahwungkuk, 5 kilometres southward. As the new settlement leader, Ki Gedeng Alang-Alang was bestowed the title “Kuwu Cerbon” (Cerbon village leader).

A prince from Pajajaran, Prince Walangsungsang, converted to Islam and was appointed as Adipati of Cirebon with the title Cakrabumi. He established the new kingdom of Cirebon and declared independence from Galuh. The establishment of the Cirebon sultanate marked the first Islamic rule in Western Java, which grew from the modest fishing village of Muara Jati to a busy port on Java’s northern coast. Cirebon grew as one of the independent sultanates under the leadership of Sunan Gunungjati, in the early 16th century.

The kingdoms of Banten and Mataram fought over Cirebon, which declared its allegiance to Sultan Agung of Mataram. But the later Mataram king ceded the city to the Dutch in the 1677. A treaty in 1705 saw Cirebon become a Dutch protectorate jointly administered by three sultans whose courts rivalled those of Central Java.

During the time of the Dutch “Culture System” a flourishing trade in colonial cash crops attracted many Chinese entrepreneurs and the Chinese influence is still evident in the batik for which Cirebon is famous. Cirebon suffered a famine in 1844, apparently triggered by a combination of drought and the shift from subsistence agriculture to cash crops, particularly indigo and sugarcane.

GARUT

Reminiscing The Switzerland Of Java

Two hundred kilometers’ drive from Jakarta, the dusty roads dried out by the scorching sun will suddenly bring you into dramatic greenery where mountains feel close, suggesting heaven may not be too far from the city hell. Welcome to Garut, the sign placed on two columns resembling a gate says. And after that, brace yourself for endless panoramic views of mountains that seem to astonishingly encircle the region popularly known as the Switzerland of Java. This area’s magnificent beauty has been widely recognized around the world since colonial times. Even legend Charlie Chaplin visited Garut twice to embrace the serene beauty of the region, which is guarded by three mountains — Papandayan, Guntur and Cikuray. The comedian first came here in 1927, then came back in 1935, staying at Grand Hotel Ngamplang in Cilawu region, a nice hilly resort around 3.4-kilometer from the city center. No one knows what brought Chaplin twice to the area, which lies about 60 kilometers southwest of Bandung, the capital of West Java.

But as soon as you touch down in Garut, you will know there are a myriad of great spots to visit near the small town. Green street signs indicating interesting sites which surely cannot be missed while in town can easily be found. But before that, why not just enjoy nature’s free treat and feel the fresh breeze blowing through the never-ending paddy fields on either side of the roads. You can just pull up your car and make a sweet stop, to embrace the glorious greenery beneath the far blue mountain, a view you will recall from children’s drawings, while sipping a coconut ice drink from ubiquitous street vendors. Enjoying this luxurious moment down by the road, people may think: Who needs Bali when you have Garut near you?

The Bandung’s Grand Mosque (Masjid Raya Bandung)

America once had twin towers (WTC). Malaysia has twin towers (Petronas Tower). Even in film Lord of the Ring also has twin towers! Bandung was not to be outdone. It is located right in the heart of the city – at Bandung Townhall. Masjid Agung Bandung (the Bandung’s Grand Mosque), now stands majestically, becoming one of the Bandung’s iconic building.

At first, around the year 1812 the Grand Mosque is only a simple traditional building, made of bamboo and thatched. The roof has not conical (Sundanese : nyungcung). Only a broad pool of water as a purification ritual that is in the front yard, which is a sign for religious buildings. There was a big fire in 1825 at town-hall, the water-pool is critical-saving-instrumental to safe the Grand Mosque on that time. A year later, the cubicle walls and bamboo had replaced with woods.

In 1850, the mosque was overhauled. Woods was replaced with stone. The roof using tiles. Entering 1900, the existence of the Grand Mosque completed with special features like a traditional mosques, including stacking three overlapping roof (sundanese : roof nyuncung), pool, east facing buildings, tombs, and no tower.

In 1930, there were additions to the mosque building. Namely a pair of short towers on either side of the building. Since that year, the building around the Square was established a kind of fortress or wall cavities with typical ornaments Priangan style. Motifs on the wall are fish scales designed by Maclaine Pont, the architect who designed the West Hall ITB.

In 1955, regarding with the implementation of the Asian-African Conference in Bandung, the Grand Mosque was again experiencing a major reshuffle. The appearance of the mosque at front side, was changed. Both the tower dismantled, and the expanded porch. A single tower was set on the front yard the mosque to the south. Drastic changes occur in the form of the roof of the main building. The mosque at first stood known as its nickname “Bale Nyuncung” because of the shape of the roof, is now change become “onion” shape. The onion dome shaped was designed by Indonesia’s first President, Soekarno. He took the middle eastern style as inspiration for the Grand Mosque’s roof dome. The onion-shaped-roof dome last for 15 years. In 1970, the reform re-occur.

Entering the 2000s, the Grand Mosque finally officially changed its name to the “Masjid Raya Bandung West Java Province”. Residents still call it “Mesjid Agung”. In 2003, the reform that took cost 36 billion rupiah, completed done. Meanwhile the front yard the mosque who overhauled. Placed in the basement parking of vehicles while the top is a park, a public area where people congregate. This is one of the city government effort to restore the Square as of yore. Basement for parking was also originally planned to accommodate street traders (street vendors), although to date not been realized.
The mosque that was completed renovated in January 13, 2006 and this does have advantages, namely that there are tourism of the tower on the north and south of the mosque. On top of the mosque tower that has a height of about 86.79 meters, visitors can see and be pampered with a view of Bandung city, even if the weather is sunny, Mount Tangkuban Parahu located in North Bandung area can also be seen.
Any visitors who will visit and go up to the Grand Mosque’s tower has to buy a ticket for Rp 2,000/each person (RM0.65 , $0.15). The deadline for visitors to be on top of the tower is also not restricted. But usually when the tower is full, visitors who had already been up, will soon go down. The average visitor is above the tower for 15 minutes. The capacity of the tower itself as much as 70 people. But sometime, even on the top of the tower has no open area, for some people who have phobias of heights, tour on the Bandung’s Great Mosque Tower will give memories and “tension” of its own.

Bogor Prepares to Host Asia-Pacific Golf Tourism Tournament

Golf tourism tournament in the Asia-Pacific was aimed at making Bogor a golf destination of the world. The committee will invite 1.5 thousand participants from the country and abroad.

The Tourism Promotion Board of Bogor District, West Java Province, is preparing to organize an event that combines travel and golf in the Asia-Pacific region.

“This event combines golf and Bogor’s natural and cultural potentials,” Zainal Saprudin, chairman of the board, stated here on Thursday.
Zainal remarked that the event was scheduled to be launched by Nurhayanti, the district’s regent, to coincide with the 34th anniversary of Bogor on June 3, 2016.

“Once launched on June 3, the dissemination of information regarding the event will be intensified. The event will be held in the first week of September 2016,” he affirmed.

According to Zainal, this golf tourism tournament in the Asia-Pacific was aimed at making Bogor a golf destination of the world. The committee will invite 1.5 thousand participants from the country and abroad.

“The foreign participants, in addition to taking part in the golf tournament, can also enjoy the natural and cultural attractions of Bogor,” Zainal pointed out.

He explained that Bogor had 11 international-standard golf courses. In addition, the district had numerous tourist destinations. If sports and tourism are combined, it would be an interesting event.
“It is such multi-effect kind of opportunities that we are aiming to grab,” he explained.
Zainal added that the increase in the number of tourists with special interest in golf had made Bogor a major competitor of China.

He noted that tourists with special interest, especially from Singapore, Malaysia, and other countries, earlier preferred China as their primary destination.

However, the tourists had now started coming to Bogor.

The data reveals that no more than some one thousand tourists with special interest in golf had visited Bogor per month.

“However, after the Tourism Promotion Board was established, the number of golf travelers now visiting Bogor had reached one thousand to 1.2 thousand per month,” he added.

Istana Bogor, Bogor

Indonesian Republic Palace and Home to Hundreds of Indian Spotted Deer

Istana Bogor is one of 6 Presidential Palaces in Indonesia. The palace is noted for its distinctive architectural, historical, features, as well as the adjoining botanical gardens. Istana Bogor was opened to the public in 1968 to public tour groups (not individuals), with the permission of the then President of Indonesia, Suharto. The number of visitors annually is approximately 10,000 people. The gardens of the palace have an area of 284,000 square metres (28.4 hectares).

The original colonial building on the site of Istana Bogor was a mansion named Buitenzorg (also Sans Souci), which was built from August 1744 as a country retreat for the Dutch Governors, including also during the period of British administration. Notable occupants of the mansion include Herman Willem Daendels and Sir Stamford Raffles.

This building was substantially damaged by an earthquake in 1834, triggered by the volcanic eruption of Mount Salak. The palace was rebuilt into its present form in 1856— this time with only one storey instead of the original three, as a precaution against further earthquakes.

From 1870 to 1942 the Istana Bogor served as the official residence of the Dutch Governors General. After Indonesian independence, the palace was much used by President Sukarno, but then largely neglected by Suharto when he came to office.

The grounds of the estate contain several buildings – The largest of which is the main palace and its two wings. The main palace contains private offices for the head of state, a library, a dining room, a ministers’ meeting room, a theater room, and the Garuda room (for welcoming State guests). The two wings are used as the guest residences for State guests. Kebun Raya Bogor (“Great Gardens of Bogor”, the Bogor Botanical Gardens) are also part of the palace grounds.

The palace houses an extensive art collection which had been accumulated by Soekarno. A herd of spotted deer still range within the palace grounds; a group of these had originally been brought there by the Dutch for hunting and sport.

Curug Malela, Bandung

A mini version of Niagara Falls

The name is Curug Malela (Malela Waterfall). This beautiful waterfall located in the village named Cidadas. Cidadas is a village in Bandung. In this area, the fields contour much like a staircase. The waterfall is not as wide as Niagara Falls, the Malela waterfall’s width is only 50 meters, but a lot of people call it a mini version of Niagara Falls.

Malela waterfall has a height of about 70 meters. The water sources are from the north of Kendeng Mountain. The water is heavy and is divided into 5 lanes. The scenery and atmosphere there are very beautiful. If you lucky there, you could seeing some monkeys drinking water in Malela waterfall. It is a view which you can’t get even in Niagara Falls.

Although the Malela waterfall is potential for tourism, but it is still lack of facilities and infrastructures. One and only road access to get there is very narrow and difficult to passing through. You have to walk around 1 Km to the reach the location of the waterfall. There are two routes to the waterfall Malela in Bandung, from sukabumi or from cimahi. If you choose from Cimahi, it takes approximately 4 hours drive. The route is Cimahi -> Batujajar -> Cihampelas -> Cililin ->Sindangkerta -> Rongga -> Malela Waterfall. When you reach Cidadas, you have to be extra careful because the road is rocky and some fairly steep climbs. After reaching the last village, Dusun Manglid, you have to walk about 1 km along the road that has the contour up and down. Near the Malela waterfall, there are several other waterfalls. In the district of West Bandung, there are some pretty interesting waterfalls such as Buana waterfall, Nyandung waterfall, and Cilinggapayung waterfall.
