Saung Angklung Udjo

Take part in a traditional orchestra at the Saung Angklung Udjo

Crowned with the title of Bandung’s ‘one-stop cultural workshop’, the Saung Angklung Udjo is the perfect place to bring the family to for a Sundanese cultural edutainment. Attend the daily performance of Tari Jaipong and Kuda Lumping accompanied by an orchestra of traditional instruments such as the Angklungs, Degungs and bamboo flutes called the Suling. (Spoiler alert: near the end of the show, the audience will be asked to join the performers in dancing and playing the instruments as well. What a great way to end the show!) Saung Angklung Udjo also has Angklung-making workshops open to the public. An Angklung is a unique instrument from the West Javanese tradition, made out of bamboo tubes that are specially carved, so it makes a specific note on the Sundanese Solfege, West Java’s own ‘Do Re Mi’ scale. The Saung Angklung Udjo is a foundation started by Udjo Ngalegana in 1966 as a means of giving back to his community, and the proceeds are used for the education of the neighbourhood children living in the area.
